Frequently Asked Questions:

1. What is Water Polo?

Water polo is a fast-paced, competitive team sport played in the water, combining elements of swimming, passing, and scoring goals. Teams work together to outmaneuver opponents, showcasing endurance, skill, and strategy. It’s an exciting game that builds strength, teamwork, and quick thinking. â€‹â€‹

2. Who can join?

Our club, the APS Knights, is open to all students entering 6th-12th grade who live in the Atlanta Public School District, except those who attend North Springs H.S. Girls who go to Pace or Lovett may play co-ed with their schools or join us. No water polo experience required, but you must be a decent swimmer (summer league swim team or similar).

3. When is the season?

Our Fall season starts in August and goes to early October and does not overlap with winter swim season. We practice Monday & Wednesday evenings @ Dynamo Aquatic Center in Chamblee and play games mostly on weekends. If you are interested in learning more, please join our Mailchimp email list and follow us on Instagram (@apswaterpolo).

4. What league is APS WP in and to what national organization do we pay dues?

APS water polo has switched leagues to the Georgia Water Polo League (GWPL)

which is under USA Water Polo (USAWP). APS players need to be members of

USA Water Polo (USAWP). Bronze level or higher (free 14 day trial membership

is available).

5. What is the Georgia Water Polo League (GWPL) and why did we switch?
Georgia Water Polo League (GWPL) is Georgia’s newest middle and high school water polo

league. In 2024, the APS water polo board of directors prioritised safety and training and

decided to switch leagues from Georgia High School Water Polo Association (GHSWPA) to

the Georgia Water Polo League (GWPL). USA Water Polo is held to higher safety and

accountability standards for players and coaches, and USA Water Polo supports training

"developmental" teams that we believe are essential for inclusivity and growth. â€‹

*APS players are NOT under American Water Polo (AWP) and DO NOT need to be AWP members.
